Eugene Escobar Jr: Princeton's Next Mayor

Born and raised amidst the vibrant yet challenging streets of New York City, Eugene Escobar Jr.'s journey is a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of community. Growing up in a single-parent household, Eugene witnessed firsthand the complexities of urban life, where opportunities and obstacles walked hand in hand. His mother, a young parent faced with the sudden absence of support after the loss of her own mother and the departure of Eugene's father, navigated the trials of raising three children in an environment marked by crime and adversity.

Eugene's childhood was a tapestry of contrasting experiences. The shadow of violence loomed large, with tragic incidents leaving indelible marks on his young mind. Yet, Eugene remained undeterred by the tumult surrounding him. His involvement in youth programs, from flag football to photography, opened windows to a world beyond the immediate challenges of his neighborhood. These experiences instilled in him a belief in the possibility of a different life, one not defined by the circumstances of his upbringing.

Each summer, Eugene's family would travel to North Carolina to visit his grandparents, offering a respite from the city's relentless pace. His grandfather, a retired New York City housing authority maintenance supervisor, had moved back to North Carolina to care for Eugene's great grandmother. These visits not only provided a change of scenery but also reinforced the values of family and hard work.

The turning point came when his family made the bold decision to leave New York for North Carolina, seeking a fresh start. However, the transition was anything but smooth. The struggle to adapt and the eventual return to New York exposed Eugene to even harsher realities of gang influence and violence, particularly during his high school years. It was a period of profound struggle but also of growth and learning.

From a young age, Eugene learned the value of hard work and financial responsibility, packing bags at supermarkets since the age of 12. This early work experience taught him the importance of earning and saving, lessons that were vital in a household where resources were scarce.

The move to Texas with his father introduced Eugene to new challenges and the experience of forging a relationship with a parent he barely knew. These years were a period of adjustment and discovery, shaping Eugene into the individual he is today.

Since 2013, Eugene has been a proud resident of Princeton, Texas, where he lives with his beautiful wife, whom he married that same year. Their deep roots in the community  fueled Eugene’s passion for local issues and his commitment to improving the lives of his fellow residents.

Why Eugene Escobar Jr. is Running for Mayor

Eugene Escobar Jr. has always had a deep love for community and a genuine passion for helping others. From a young age, he knew he wanted to be involved in improving the lives of those around him. While the path wasn't always clear, Eugene’s heart was set on making a difference. It wasn't until the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world seemed to pause, that Eugene had the opportunity to reflect on his surroundings and realize the significant role local government plays in everyday life.

During this time, Eugene became increasingly engaged with local politics, gaining a deeper understanding of how decisions made at the city level directly impact the lives of residents. Unlike the often distant and abstract issues of national politics, Eugene saw that local politics were the bedrock of community life, affecting everything from public safety to the quality of schools and city services. This realization was a turning point.

Over the next few years, Eugene began to connect with people in his community and city officials, listening to their concerns and understanding the challenges they faced. Through these conversations, Eugene’s calling became clear. His life experiences, both personal and professional, had uniquely prepared him for a role where he could be a catalyst for positive change.

"God and my heart helped me see that all the experiences in my life made it so I would be the perfect person for this role," Eugene says. "This role requires someone who loves people, someone who listens, but also someone who has the experience building from scratch."

As Eugene delved deeper into the workings of the city, he noticed significant issues. He questioned what the city was doing for its residents, including himself, as a taxpayer. The more he talked to others, the more he realized they shared his concerns. Fast forward to the 2024 election year, and Princeton has faced numerous challenges, including negative press and a sense of disconnect between the city and its residents. Incidents like abuse in the school district and a lack of communication have only heightened the urgency for change.

Eugene knew this was a pivotal moment. He had a choice: to leave Princeton or to become the change he wanted to see. While leaving might have been the easier option, it would only benefit him and his family, not the broader community. Eugene is not one to think only of himself. "Leaving does not fix the issues here in Princeton," he reflects. "I had to decide, so I leave or do I become the change?" His decision was clear. Eugene chose to stay and fight for the community he loves. Despite efforts to work with current city officials, Eugene found himself stonewalled and ignored. It became apparent that to make a real difference, he would have to take on a more direct role in governance. "I can't depend on the people that I and the residents voted in to protect us," Eugene states. "I decided that the only way I can help is to do it myself."

Over the past few years, Eugene felt guided by a higher purpose, feeling a divine push to step up and lead. Trusting in his faith and his abilities, Eugene is confident that running for mayor is the right step. He is ready and more than capable to bring about the change that Princeton needs.

"I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do." – Acts 13:22

Like David, I strive to lead with integrity and a heart dedicated to God’s will, always seeking to serve with faith and humility. My goal is to be a leader who listens, learns, and grows, committed to doing what is right for our community.
